  1. If you reach Innsbruck by 10:00 or earlier, and are able to stay until 17:00 (which will get you back to Salzburg by 19:00) I think it's possible to do everything on your list if you skip either the zoo or Schloss Ambras. My first tip is to buy the Innsbruck Card, because it will give you quick and free access to everything.
  2. The wonderful World of the Renaissance Schloss Ambras is one of the most important sights of Innsbruck. At Schloss Ambras you can immerse yourself in the life and the passion for collecting of the Renaissance prince Ferdinand II (1529 - 1595): Discover his chamber of art and wonders (Kunst- und Wunderkammer), his armories, and his Antiquarium.

1. History of theAmbras Castle in Innsbrück (Schloss Ambras)

The Ambras Castle is situated upon a rock ca. 100 meters above the valley floor created by the River Inn. News of Ambras, spelled “Amras” or “Omras,” has come down to us from as early as the 10th century. Long before Innsbruck became a city, it achieved more than just local importance as the established seat of the Counts from the House of Andechs, whose original lands lay in Upper Bavaria.

There remains nothing of the original Andechs castle, which was destroyed in 1133. The castle later passed by inheritance from the Andechs family into the possession of the Prince of Tirol. The only evidence of this early, medieval period can be seen in some of the materials that were used to build the Upper Castle.

From Wenns drive out of the Pitztal valley. For safety it is advised not to take the A12 from Imst to Innsbruck via the Roppener Tunnel as many accidents happen inside this tunnel. Instead take the road B171 towards Karres / Ötztal just at the roundabout at the other side of the bridge across the river Inn.

After some 8 kilometers, at the crossing with the Ötztal, follow the signs with A12 Innsbruck to get on the highway. At Innsbruck take the “Innsbruck West” exit (number 79).
